I gave up drinking, and I am not a recovering alcoholic.
I simply reached the point in my relationship with alcohol where it no longer served a purpose in my life. I drank to cope and after drinking, I often times felt emotional and sad. I would become moody and experience stomach cramps which would require an entire day to recover from.
I’ve tried to quit drinking in the past, but it never quite worked out. However, this past October I decided to give sobriety another chance, and even though it has been hard it has been very rewarding. I feel different. I no longer have acne and my dark spots are fading. I look at the people in my life differently- valuing their perfections and imperfections. I am reading and writing again. I feel the presence of God and my ancestors- Oshun, Aje and so on. Overall, I am happy. Happier than I have been in a very long time. Sobriety is working. It is improving and changing my life for the better, and I want the same improvements for you. Even if you are not an alcoholic or have a drinking problem, sobriety can be the key to living a happier, healthier, less stressful life. Here’s why:
You will look better. Sobriety will improve your overall health. Since putting the bottle down, my acne has cleared up. I currently do not have a single pimple on my face! Better than that, my dark spots are fading. I use to wear makeup everyday. Now, I travel to the city, job interviews and the mall without it. The dark bags under my eyes are also disappearing.
In addition to my facial improvements, I am also losing weight. Sobriety has caused my diet to change. I no longer go on junk food binges after a night of drinking. I eat three nutritious meals and exercise everyday.
You will feel better. Since becoming sober, I experience less stomach pains. In the past I would be stuck in bed (or in the bathroom) after a night of drinking. I am not too sure why but alcohol and my stomach didn’t get along. Maybe, I was consuming too much alcohol at one time. I don’t know, but what I do know is that I no longer have stomach aches. I am probably the healthiest I have ever been. Aside from the stomach pains, I experience less mood swings. I typically feel calm and grateful. Grateful to be alive and living in the moment. I no longer feel like a victim of my past. Instead, I feel like a victor. I feel like I’ve won.
Your relationships will improve. I would need a decade to share with you stories about the people I have hurt while being under the influence. When I am drunk, I can get nasty. Real nasty. I say mean, hurtful things. My drunken days are in the past, but there are certain situations that still replay itself in my head. For the most part, I have apologized to those I have hurt while intoxicated. I have also forgiven myself for hurting them, and try my hardest to live in the present. This means staying sober not only for myself, but for the people who have stood by me and remained loyal to me even when I was at my worst. I owe it to them.
Your finances will improve. This reason is simple. Sobriety will allow you to save more money. I use to spend about $60 a week on alcohol and an additional $100 on food to nurse my hangover. Drinking is expensive, and I now have more money in my pockets for other things- shopping for example.
You deserve to live your best life. Within weeks of my sobriety, I began praying and meditating. I workout every day. I started this blog and began actively working on my podcast. I met new mentors and a life coach. I no longer arrive late to interviews or meetings. I chose honesty over dishonesty. I look and feel great. My relationships with my family and friends have improved. I look at the world differently and have gained new perspectives and opportunities. I am not the best possible version of myself but I am getting there. I am living the best life I have ever lived and it is because sobriety has allowed me to transform. I am happier, healthier, and less stressed. These are the reasons you should consider sobriety even if you don’t have a drinking problem.
